  • What is the total daily energy expenditure (TDEE)?

    Total Daily Energy Expenditure (TDEE) is the total amount of energy your body burns in a day. It is used to determine your daily calorie needs.

  • What are the activity levels?

    Activity level is a multiplier applied to your BMR to estimate total daily energy expenditure.

    • Sedentary (desk job, no exercise) — ×1.2
    • Light (1–3 days/week) — ×1.375
    • Moderate (3–5 days/week) — ×1.55
    • Active (6–7 days/week) — ×1.725
    • Extra active (physical job or twice/day) — ×1.9
  • How is total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) calculated?

    Total daily energy expenditure (TDEE) is calculated by multiplying the Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) by the activity level. This approach is endorsed by the American Council on Exercise (ACE) as the standard method for estimating daily calorie needs.

    TDEE = BMR x activity level

    Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the amount of energy your body burns at rest. This calculator uses the Mifflin-St Jeor equation to estimate BMR.

    BMR = 10 x weight (kg) + 6.25 x height (cm) - 5 x age (years) + 5 (for male) or -161 (for female)
