What is BMR?
Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is the minimum number of calories your body needs to sustain basic physiological functions — breathing, circulation, cell production, and temperature regulation — while at complete rest. It represents the largest portion of your total daily energy expenditure.
Mifflin-St Jeor formula
Developed in 1990, the Mifflin-St Jeor equation is considered the most accurate BMR formula for most people and is recommended by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. Original paper (PubMed)
Men: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age + 5 Women: BMR = 10 × weight(kg) + 6.25 × height(cm) − 5 × age − 161
Harris-Benedict formula
The original Harris-Benedict equation was published in 1919 and revised in 1984. It tends to overestimate BMR slightly compared to Mifflin-St Jeor, but remains widely used as a reference.
Men: BMR = 66.47 + 13.75 × weight(kg) + 5.003 × height(cm) − 6.755 × age Women: BMR = 655.1 + 9.563 × weight(kg) + 1.85 × height(cm) − 4.676 × age
