Why is water important?
Water is essential for all body processes: temperature regulation, nutrient transport, waste removal, and maintaining skin elasticity. Dehydration leads to fatigue, poor concentration, and reduced athletic performance. Adequate water intake boosts metabolism and helps maintain a healthy weight.
How is daily intake calculated?
The base intake is calculated at 30 ml per 1 kg of body weight. Adjustments are then made for activity level (500-1000 ml for exercise) and climate (up to 15% more in hot weather).
Daily intake = Weight × 30 + Activity bonus + Climate bonus where Activity: low (0), moderate (500 ml), high (1000 ml) Climate: cold (-10%), temperate (0%), hot (+15%)
Factors affecting water needs
Water consumption is influenced by several factors. Weight determines the base calculation — higher weight requires more water. Activity level matters because exercise increases needs through perspiration. Climate plays a significant role: hot weather increases evaporation while cold air is dry despite lower thirst sensation. Health conditions like illness, pregnancy, and breastfeeding require increased hydration. Diet affects intake too — a high-fiber diet needs more water for proper digestion. Finally, caffeine and alcohol act as diuretics and increase water loss from the body.
Tips for staying hydrated
Drink in small portions of 200-250 ml at a time, roughly every 2-3 hours, to allow your body to absorb water efficiently. Don't wait for thirst — thirst is a sign of early dehydration. Start your day with water before coffee, juice, or soda. If plain water gets boring, add flavor with lemon, cucumber, or mint to make drinking more enjoyable. During workouts, drink 200-300 ml every 15-20 minutes to replace lost fluids. However, don't overcomplicate things — more than 4 liters per day can be harmful. Listen to your body and find the right balance for you.
