How is the tile count calculated?
The calculator divides the room area by the tile area to get the base count, then adds 10% for cutting waste. For diagonal laying, an additional 41% is added to account for the extra material needed at angles.
Straight vs. diagonal laying
Straight laying runs tiles parallel to the walls — minimal waste, easier to install. Diagonal laying rotates tiles 45°, which gives a more dynamic look but requires significantly more material due to cuts along the edges.
- Straight laying — coefficient ×1
- Diagonal laying — coefficient ×1.41
Allowance for breakage and cutting
An additional percentage of material to account for incorrect sizes, breakage during delivery or installation. Usually 5-15% is recommended for straight laying and 10-20% for diagonal laying.
Grout joints between tiles
The width of grout joints between tiles is filled with grout. The size of joints affects the total grout area you need to purchase separately. Typical joint widths are 2-5 mm.
